How To Make Matcha

Preparing matcha is a simple ritual that brings out its smooth flavour, vibrant colour and delicate froth. Follow the steps below to enjoy matcha at home.

Ingredients

  • Matcha: 1-2 teaspoons (2-3g)
  • Hot water (70-80°C): 60-70ml

Equipment

  • Matcha bowl
  • Tea whisk (chasen)

Method

  1. Warm the bowl - Pour hot water into the bowl to warm it, then discard the water.
  2. Add the matcha - Place the sifted matcha into the warmed bowl.
  3. Pour the hot water - Slowly pour the water into the bowl, being careful not to pour it directly onto the matcha.
  4. Whisk - Using the chasen, vigorously whisk the matcha and water together in a quick zigzag or circular motion until a frothy layer forms on the surface.
  5. Serve - Once the matcha is smooth and a beautiful layer of foam has formed on top, it's ready to enjoy.
