Out of all the forms of green tea, Matcha is the most traditional form but also, recently, one of the most popular!
Matcha is a green tea powder. Vibrant green in colour and finely powdered, it is made from high quality dried green tea leaves. Stronger in concentration and healthier than regular green loose leaf teas, Matcha is sometimes referred to as a green tea extract.
Found in all sorts of foods, especially healthy ones, and also a popular flavour in drinks such as matcha lattes.
With Matcha, a cup of tea contains all sorts of health benefits including promoting weight loss which you can find detailed below.
Originally used at Chinese Buddhist Chan (Zen) monasteries, and then later brought to Japan by traveling Zen monks, the Matcha form of powdered green tea was highly valued by the Zen Buddhists for its energising properties and health benefits.
From about the 12th century onwards, Matcha became popular across Japan, at first in Buddhist monasteries and then by the Japanese elite, and spreading further into the community.
Over time, elaborate Japanese tea ceremonies evolved, involving a range of matcha tools including a bamboo whisk and ceramic matcha bowls (all of which you can buy from us on this page - see our range of Matcha products above!)
Japanese Matcha green tea powder has become a global sensation, celebrated not only in its traditional form but also in trendy beverages like the Matcha Latte, which has taken social media by storm.
Thanks to its vibrant color and unique flavor, Matcha is incredibly versatile. It's used in a variety of dishes - from healthy smoothies to cookies, ice-cream and indulgent desserts - adding both flavour and its distinctively vibrant green colour.
And of course, there's the iconic Matcha Latte - or as we call it here at LUPICIA, Matcha Au Lait - a sweet, creamy hot beverage that is both soothing and flavourful (see above).
Matcha, like green tea, is packed with health benefits, but since it's a concentrated form of green tea, it offers an even more potent boost. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, matcha supports overall vitality and wellness. For a deeper dive into the specific health benefits of matcha and green tea, visit our Green Tea page.
We offer some very high grade single origin, plantation-specific, ceremonial grade organic matcha teas from Japan such as Matcha Kurama and Matcha "Nishio"
Whilst Matcha, being more a more concentrated form of Japanese Green Tea, has more caffeine, it still has overall a lower caffeine content than coffee.
Due to its fine powder consistency, Matcha is not normally found in tea bags. Here at LUPICIA however, we have blended Matcha with a lovely Kirara Rice Green Tea to create Matcha Kirara Tea Bags
